About ESEC
The East of Scotland European Consortium (ESEC) is a non statutory joint committee representing the European interests of fourteen local authorities in Eastern Scotland. With a population of just over 2.3 million (43% of Scotland’s total) this is an area of contrasting industrial, rural and urban landscapes with significant North Sea coastline. Member authorities collaborate on a shared European agenda.
Background
- ESEC was established in 1991 by four regional councils – after reorganisation of Scottish local government in April 1996. Membership comprised 11 local councils – joined by Aberdeenshire in April 2000, Aberdeen City in 2002 and Moray in 2004;
- The key decision-making body is the Policy Board comprising one elected representative from each council – underpinned by an officer group;
- It is serviced by a secretariat which rotates amongst the member councils;
- Our Brussels office is based within Scotland House to provide a focus for contacts with European institutions and the development of wider European regional links.
